Why Pre-Marriage Counselling Matters

Marriage is not merely one of the most crucial decisions of life; it is the most crucial decision of life. It is not merely the beginning of a new relationship between two individuals. It is the commencement of two new families coming together and forming a lasting bond.

Marriage begins a commitment involving expectations, responsibilities, families, finances, cooperation, lifestyle choices, personal values and often a significant change in the way both individuals live their lives.

Yet, many decisions to marry are influenced predominantly by emotions, attraction, family expectations, social considerations, age, perceived compatibility, cultural compulsions or simply the desire to settle down. These factors are not necessarily wrong, but individuals should consciously evaluate the larger picture before making a life-changing decision.

Since these decisions are not routine and families may rely on their own understanding and interpretations, it is strongly recommended that a proposal be reviewed by a professional counsellor before a life-changing commitment is made. The counsellor considers the parameters that may help individuals assess the stability of their long-term commitment.

Social Counselling helps individuals move from “I want to marry this person” to “I have consciously evaluated whether we understand each other, whether our expectations are reasonably aligned, whether we are prepared for the responsibilities involved, and whether we can navigate our differences constructively.”

That distinction is the heart of Pre-Marriage Counselling.

Important Aspects to Consider Before Marriage

Drawing on work with diverse people across multiple regions and multicultural societies, counsellors have consolidated 10 to 12 broad dimensions that individuals should make a point of considering.

Expectations and Understanding

  • What are your expectations from marriage and your partner?
  • Do you genuinely understand your partner’s expectations from marriage, and are you prepared to meet them?

Personality, Behaviour and Values

  • Personality, behaviour, attributes and thought process.
  • Family values and principles, including each family’s philosophy of life.

Family Culture and Lifestyle

  • Family culture and lifestyle compatibility.
  • Input from parents.
  • In a joint or close-knit family, expectations may normally increase.

Career and Aspirations

  • Current career and future career aspirations: are these agreed with the partner and fully aligned?

Financial Responsibility

  • Do you understand financial responsibility? Independently managing a family is key.

Children and Family Planning

  • Children and family planning.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Individual roles and responsibilities in managing a family.

Limitations and Alignment

  • Do you understand your partner’s limitations, and are you aligned?

Emotional Maturity and Adjustment

  • Emotional maturity and adjustment capability.

How Social Counselling Helps in Pre-Marriage Counselling

The counselling process follows these stages: Understand the proposal → Conduct due diligence → Identify key pros and cons → Objective analysis → Examine implications and seek inputs → Clarify and sum up → Enable conscious decision-making.

1. Understand the Proposal

  • The counsellor supports the individual in organizing a structured overview of what is known and what is not known.
  • The counsellor evaluates the depth of information and understanding the individual holds. This forms the foundation for the discussion ahead.

2. Conduct Due Diligence

  • Marriage proposals should not be evaluated purely on emotions or perceptions. Both factual and emotional information needs to be considered and diligently discussed.
  • Due diligence is conducted based on the inputs provided. Social Counselling does not initiate any independent action on its own.

3. Identify Key Pros and Cons

  • The counsellor helps bring both favourable and unfavourable aspects into consideration.
  • This is not about producing a mathematical scorecard. It helps the individual determine the right path.

4. Objective Analysis

  • The aspects are further evaluated objectively using Social Counselling filters and conscious thinking.

5. Examine Implications and Seek Inputs

  • Factors may appear positive or negative in isolation but have different implications when viewed in the broader context of the individual’s circumstances.
  • The individual’s inputs and perspective therefore remain critical.

6. Clarify and Sum Up

  • The counsellor brings together the understanding, findings, alignments, concerns, implications and areas requiring consideration.

7. Enable Conscious Decision-Making

  • The final objective is to enable conscious decision-making. The counsellor does not make the decision.
  • The counsellor ensures that the wider aspects have been taken into account and given due consideration. The individual makes the decision after consciously considering the wider picture.
