Corporate Employee Counselling

The workplace is not merely about performing a role. As individuals move through their professional journey, they encounter new responsibilities, changing expectations, role transitions, pressures and situations that may require them to think differently and prepare themselves better.

A person entering the corporate world for the first time may need help understanding what lies ahead. A young executive may need greater clarity about expectations and priorities. An employee moving into a managerial or leadership role may need to prepare themselves for a fundamentally different level of responsibility. For managers, this role is mostly dominated by people management or ops delivery which is generally something managers may not have done much previously, or even if done, might not be to the extent now expected. Similarly, at a leadership level, the expectations change vastly since now more of strategic thinking, financial planning, direction of company, client management and large financial decisions comes into picture. Such junctures may require the individual to pause, understand the situation and consciously determine how to move forward.

Corporate Employee Counselling provides an independent and thoughtful space to do exactly that.

The objective is not to become an HR forum, a grievance mechanism or a professional career advisory service. It is to help the individual understand the situation objectively, examine their own thoughts and expectations, recognise their responsibilities, and prepare themselves to deal with the situation more consciously and constructively.

When may Corporate Employee Counselling be useful?

It may be particularly relevant when an employee is:

entering the corporate world for the first time;

transitioning from a smaller organisation to a larger or multinational organisation;

preparing for a new or higher role following a promotion;

experiencing a significant change in role or responsibilities;

considering a transition from one role or function to another;

seeking clarity about what to expect from a new professional situation;

finding it difficult to establish the right focus or priorities;

struggling to understand workplace expectations or professional responsibilities;

influenced by perceptions, comparisons or narratives prevalent on social or digital media; or

facing a professional situation where they would benefit from an independent and objective conversation.

Employees are encouraged to clearly indicate the nature of the counselling they seek, or come prepared with specific questions they would like to discuss. This enables the Counsellor to understand the purpose of the conversation and make the session more meaningful.

What does Social Counselling focus on?

1Preparation
2Expectation Setting
3Focus & Priorities
4Responsibility
5Conscious Thinking
6Constructive Action

The conversation helps the individual understand what lies ahead, examine their expectations, recognise their responsibilities and limitations, identify what deserves their attention, and prepare themselves for the situation.

The Counsellor may also challenge perceptions where appropriate. Corporate Employee Counselling is not a “yes, yes” conversation or merely a space to complain about the organisation or workplace. The objective is a constructive and balanced conversation that helps the individual examine their own thinking and approach as well.

Where an employee is considering a professional change or transition, Social Counselling may help them think through the situation and understand the considerations involved, without making the decision on their behalf.

The Counsellor does not take decisions on behalf of the employee. The individual remains responsible for their professional choices and actions.

Target Outcome\*

Helping an individual develop greater clarity about their professional situation, consciously understand what lies ahead, recognise their responsibilities and limitations, set realistic expectations, establish appropriate focus and priorities, prepare themselves for change, and make more considered choices about their professional journey.
