Why Does Post-Marriage Counselling Matter?

Marriage evolves over time. Expectations change, circumstances change, responsibilities increase and differences that once appeared manageable may sometimes become sources of recurring conflict.

Marriage inevitably involves differences in expectations, personalities, habits, priorities, families and circumstances. Some differences are manageable; others gradually become sources of resentment, recurring conflict or emotional distance.

However, most often we have observed that the visible problem is not the fundamental problem.

For example:

Household Responsibilities

  • Repeated arguments about household responsibilities may actually arise from an underlying lack of appreciation or even acknowledgement.

Financial Disagreements

  • Disagreement over finances may actually be about trust issues, control or even lack of decision making before spending.

Conflict with In-Laws

  • Conflict with in-laws may actually be about not setting clear boundaries or expectations with them.

Reduced Communication

  • Reduced communication may be a consequence rather than the cause of emotional distance.

Disagreements About Children

  • Disagreements about children may reflect fundamentally different expectations about marriage itself.
02

Finding the Fundamental Issue

Social Counselling plays a pivotal role here since we believe in finding the fundamental issue, rather than merely treating the presented symptom.

03

Issues Creating a Potential Disconnect in a Marriage

Working across a diverse range of people across multiple regions and for multicultural societies, our counsellors have suggested consolidation of some 15 to 16 key potential areas which create disconnects in a marriage.

Potential areas could include:

Ego, Pride and Cooperation

  • Ego, false pride and lack of understanding or cooperation.

External Influence and Comparison

  • Excessive external influence, including social connections or social media, leading to unconscious negative thoughts, including comparisons.

Mismatched Expectations

  • Expectations mismatch from one another or failure to live up to expectations.

Respect and Dignity

  • Perceived or compromised respect and dignity.

Trust and Financial Management

  • Trust issues, including financial management.

Roles and Responsibilities as Partners

  • Roles and responsibilities as partners.

Career Priorities

  • Career priorities.

Family and Relatives

  • External or internal interference from family or relations.

Children and Parenting

  • Children and parenting.

Lifestyle and Cultural Differences

  • Lifestyle and cultural differences that are not getting adjusted or neutralised.

Personal Independence and Space

  • Personal independence and space.

Communication and Its Quality

  • Lack of healthy communication or quality of communication.

Emotional Connection and Intimacy

  • Lack of emotional connection and intimacy.

Personal Habits and Behaviours

  • Personal habits or behaviours affecting the relationship.

Values, Principles and Priorities

  • Differences in values, principles or priorities.

Role of Social Counselling in the Post-Marriage Stage

Understand the Concern → Hear Both Perspectives → Identify the Fundamental Issue → Examine Material Factors → Facilitate Conscious Evaluation → Identify Areas for Change or Acceptance → Establish a Constructive Way Forward

Our Counsellors do not become an advocate for one spouse against the other.

Once the fundamental issues and material points are identified, the Counsellor brings them clearly to the respective individual's attention, explains the potential implications and facilitates conscious consideration of what may need to change, be accepted, adjusted or better understood.

This is a powerful way of counselling since, as an outcome:

When Partner A May Need to Change

  • Sometimes Partner A may be required to change some things at their end.

When Partner B May Need to Change

  • Sometimes Partner B may be required to change some things at their end.

When Both Partners May Need to Change

  • Sometimes both may need to change certain things at their end.

Acceptance of Reality

  • Sometimes the important intervention is not a change in behaviour at all, but acceptance of a reality that cannot reasonably be changed.
05

Target Outcome*

To provide a compassionate and objective analysis of the situation, remove the fog created by immediate concerns, perceptions and individual narratives, and bring out the genuine areas of discontent and underlying issues.

The objective is to bring greater clarity to the relationship and the understanding between the individuals, enabling them to consciously determine an appropriate path forward.
